Other Retinal Diseases
Understanding the range of retinal conditions that can threaten your vision
The retina is neural tissue that is difficult to regenerate once damaged. In addition to macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, there are various diseases that threaten vision, such as uveitis, retinal vascular occlusion, and epiretinal membrane.

Uveitis
Redness and pain may not be simple conjunctivitis
it could be uveitis, a serious threat to your sight.
Inflammation in the uvea, a vascular-rich tissue inside the eye, can cause
serious complications such as cataracts and glaucoma,
and even blindness if treatment is delayed.
- 1
Infectious Uveitis
Inflammation caused by external viruses, bacteria, or fungi infiltrating the eye.

- 2
Non-infectious Uveitis
A type of autoimmune disease
where the immune system
malfunctions and attacks the
eye tissue without bacterial infection.
Classification by Uveitis Location

- Anterior
- Posterior
- Intermediate

Anterior Uveitis
The most common inflammation in the front of the eye
Inflammation occurs in the iris and ciliary body, causing severe eye pain, photophobia, and redness. Early treatment leads to quick recovery, but if left untreated, it can cause elevated eye pressure or cataracts.
Posterior Uveitis
Inflammation in the back of the eye
that directly attacks the retina and choroidInflammation occurs in the retina and choroid, which play crucial roles in vision. While external redness is minimal, vision loss and visual distortion are severe, requiring highly precise treatment due to optic nerve damage risk.
Intermediate Uveitis
Inflammation in the vitreous and pars plana
At this stage, inflammatory cells spread in the vitreous of the middle part of the eye. Rather than pain, the main symptoms are blurred vision or floaters appearing before the eyes.
Panuveitis
A dangerous state where inflammation has spread throughout the entire eye
When extensive inflammation occurs throughout the entire uvea from front to back, symptoms are complex and the risk of vision loss is highest, requiring immediate intensive treatment protocols.
Retinal Vascular Occlusion
A sudden event that threatens your vision Retinal Vascular Occlusion
A condition causing rapid vision loss due to blocked retinal blood vessels, requiring immediate emergency treatment within the critical window to prevent permanent damage.

An ophthalmic emergency in which the artery supplying
oxygen and nutrients to the retina becomes blocked, causing sudden vision loss.

A condition where the vein that drains blood from the retina
becomes blocked, causing blood stagnation and retinal edema or hemorrhage.
Epiretinal Membrane
A fibrous membrane forming on the macula Epiretinal Membrane
A disease where an abnormal transparent membrane forms on the macular surface, causing distorted vision (metamorphopsia) or blurriness. Determining the optimal timing for surgery through precise examination before the membrane directly compresses the macula is key to preserving vision.
